We are traveling to another country for less than $500 per person for over a week. How the heck can you do that?

I just booked a flight for my family to head on spring break. I was notified of this from Going (formerly Scott's Cheap Flights). I was agnostic to the exact location.
We planned the trip around cheap flights - $1,064 for 6 roundtrip tickets. (I should mention that we will drive 3 hours to leave from a major hub instead of our local airport)
From there, we planned our adventure by looking at low cost accommodation through AirBnb and transportation by thinking about how locals get around.
Lastly, we eat what locals eat - it is 9 days/8 nights and we can be adventurous eating what locals enjoy.
I will try to remember to report back on the exact costs for the trip but I am counting on
Flights - $1,064
Lodging ($75-100 / night) - $600-800
Transportation - $450
Food ($5/meal/person - 3 meals/24 meals) - $720
~$3,000 all in
Sure beats Disney-world!
