In 2012 I launched an FP&A team at Cardone Industries. We had some rockstars that signed up to jump onto this new team.

Remembering those days brings back good and painful memories. As an FP&A Analyst, there are some skills you've gotta have in your toolkit. Here they are:

  1. Financial Acumen: Understand the financial theory and be able to apply it. It's the bedrock of your role.
  2. Tech Savvy: Tools like Excel, Power BI, or Python will be your new best friends. Get to know them real well.
  3. Analytical Thinking: Spot trends, identify patterns, predict outcomes. This skill will put you a cut above the rest.
  4. Communication Skills: Can you translate complex data into understandable insights? That's a major plus.
  5. Business Insight: Understanding your company's goals and strategy can help you provide more impactful recommendations.
  6. Time Management: Meeting deadlines while juggling multiple projects is part of the game.
  7. Adaptability: The finance world moves fast. Can you keep up and adjust on the fly?

Home in on these skills, and you'll be scoring FP&A goals in no time.
